So, today something a little different. This was a mom and kid day (my favorite days, when we are together all day!) and I was looking for a way to get my little Lego fiend to put down the bricks and explore outside. Now, to be fair, he spends a lot of time outside. But, this time of year in Seattle, you need to go out when the weather cooperates which is not necessarily when you may have planned to be out, or may even want to be out.
Being four, there is little that wonder-kid likes more than playing games, so I set up a little game called “nature scavenger hunt.” While he was occupied with Legos I went outside and picked a few random things from the garden and photographed them. Then I printed the photos out on some plain white paper. Wonder-kid happily took that paper outside and matched the pictures to the plants. Then, we snipped a little bit of each matching plant and put it in a bag. When we got back inside, he glued the snippets of plant next to their pictures. We talked about what they were called, which ones were okay to eat, what they smelled like, how their leaves were the same and different.
All in all, a success. He was proud that he knew some of the plants and that he was able to find the others, we got outside, and we spent a lot of time talking together. Cool.
