Hello all! We are having another sunny weekend in Seattle. Two in a row, practically unheard of (common joke around here: What do you call two straight days of rain in Seattle? A weekend. ) So, today was another day out and about enjoying the sun. Will we be so lucky tomorrow?
Last night, I did manage to make some progress on a chain for my lovely friend Tyler. I made up two samples of chain: both are the same pattern, but one has slightly smaller links than the other. Once I know which one she prefers, I’ll construct the rest of the chain, get LOTS of soldering practice as I close each and every loop and spring, and then polish it with a trip through the tumbler. I made the springs with 24 gauge silver, which feels delicate, but I think will hold up nicely once it is work-hardened a bit (in a nutshell, cutting, hammering, bending all cause the molecules in the metal to line up, making the metal more rigid.) I’ll probably do a test with a small section to make sure it can properly bear the weight of a good size charm. If not, I’ll use these springs for something else and replace them with something a bit more robust.
I have mentioned before that I can be impatient, especially when I am feeling all arty and want to have something to quickly show for my inspiration, but with a project like this it is good practice to make samples, test, and try things out before committing to a final outcome. So even though it’s hard for me, and I want to jump ahead, it’s an exercise in being patient, and that is never a bad thing.
And since I mentioned the weather, a few photos from last weekends outing to a local hiking spot, Tiger Mountain. Our first gloriously sunny weekend in a long, long time. We even managed to get warm enough to take off our jackets (eventually!)
